Steed’s Ashva belt drive bicycles turn the rear wheel through a synchronous belt and aluminium alloy pulleys, with no chain. The front and rear pulleys have a curvilinear tooth profile that matches the belt. This spreads the load evenly, so power moves smoothly at low speed and high torque. The belt drivetrain is quiet and low-friction. With no chain, chainring or derailleur, the frame looks cleaner, you skip chain oiling and cleaning, and your clothes stay free of grease. Steed rates the belt drive for up to 5,000 km of hassle-free riding.
Ashva belt drive bikes are single speed, so there is no gear to adjust or get out of tune. They suit flat, short city routes, commuting, fitness and leisure rides. The range includes 20" and 24" frames for children and teens, and 42, 48 and 52 frames for adults. If you want a 3 speed internal gear hub with a twist shifter, choose the shaft drive range.
Designed in-house by Steed. Sealed bearings take both radial and axial loads and turn with low friction. The axle is special steel, housed in an aluminium alloy casing.
The Hub has been designed and developed in-house The conventional free wheel arrangement of ratchet and pawl mechanism has been replaced with clutch bearing that eliminates the ratchet noise. The axle shaft is made out of special steel and the entire arrangement has cupped inside the aluminum alloy casing.
Steed also makes shaft driven (chainless) bicycles. Heat-treated Cr-Mo alloy spiral bevel gears give wear resistance, and alloy steel pedal and drive shafts give torsional strength. Steed states the shaft drive lasts more than 15,000 km. Single speed shaft models use the CMS Friction Free Hub, and 3 speed models use a Sturmey-Archer internal gear hub.
Know MoreA belt drive bicycle sends pedal power to the rear wheel through a toothed synchronous belt and pulleys instead of a chain. It is also called a belt drive bike or belt drivetrain bicycle. Steed also calls these chainless bicycles.
It depends on what you value. A belt drive is clean and quiet, with no chain to oil or clean and no grease on your clothes. A chain bike is usually lighter and offers more gears. If you ride daily in a city and want low upkeep, a belt drive fits. If you race or ride steep terrain, a geared chain bike fits better.
Belt drive (Ashva range) is rated for up to 5,000 km with a 1-year warranty, and the models start at a lower price. That suits fitness, leisure and shorter rides. Shaft drive is built for up to 15,000 km with a 5-year warranty, and it suits daily commuting and long-term use. It also offers 3 speed models.
Steed rates the Ashva belt drive for up to 5,000 km, and it carries a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. For comparison, Steed recommends replacing a conventional chain around every 3,000 km.
You skip chain cleaning and oiling. Brakes, tyre pressure, hubs and general checks still apply, as on any bicycle.
No. Steed describes the belt drive as friction-free, silent and smooth. The rear hub’s clutch bearing replaces the ratchet and pawl, so there is no clicking when you stop pedalling.
The ABR 20 is Steed’s most affordable belt drive bike at Rs. 15,499, followed by the ABR 24 at Rs. 16,169.
The 20" and 24" models suit children and teens. The 42, 48 and 52 models suit adults. Use the filter section on the shop page to filter by kids, men’s or women’s.
